Thermofoil Cabinet Doors

Thermofoil Cabinet Doors

We’ve all seen a thermofoil cabinet door but many just do not know what it is called. Thermofoil cabinet door are the white plastic covered doors that are common in houses built in the late 90’s and beyond. One of the great features about these doors is that they are about impervious to anything – just as most plastics are.  Wine stains – not happening.  And as long as the seal between the front and back covering is intact, they won’t be damaged by water. But the very thing that makes it just about impossible to damage the finish, makes them almost impervious to painting.  The hard surface doesn’t accept paint well.    So often when I see painted thermofoil doors they are severely scratched around the knobs.  The finish is fresh for three to five years at best.  And painting doesn’t address the problem with the seam weakening between the front and back layers of the thermofoil material. When a contractor chooses a thermofoil cabinet door for their customers, it’s a choice that will yellow but never change for the better.
